I didn't visit this topic for a time because a lack in time management.
I know there is a difference between Pinus and Picea.
Both are living with Mykorhizza. A lot, if not all, trees do so.
For example a beech doesn't like ST also. If used on a regular basis the tree will go to bonsai heaven.
There are a lot of different species of Mykorhizza and the way they support the tree.
I did a lot of experiments with trees and ST. It is both mine (and other bonsaiist) experience and findings in literatur that gives me the impression I have about ST.
It does harm certain species. It also has a possitive effect on many deciduous trees.
I also did some research in spraying different firtilizers upon the needles of Picea. The 7 kinds of fertilizers I used all send the trees to heaven.
Recently I found a fertilizer that does work perfectly and doesn't kill picea's:
Conifer Balsem. I use this once a month, this works perfect on weakend trees.
I can't tell if ST is the cause in this case. There are a lot of causes that can course this reaction with Picea.
The acid of your fingers(styling), spraying with fertelizers on trees wich are standing close to your Picea, some pesticides and last but not least watering are cause that can establish this reaction.
Ofcourse the tree needs rest before and after: collecting, styling and/of repotting.
